Charcoal would be appropriate for a five or six year old ranch kid.  Gentle.  The kid could come home from school and jump on him.  Go help Mom and Dad gather the cows on the weekend.  Charcoal handles well, rides around well.  He moves out, wants to trot, has a good stop.
